How to Vet IT Companies

Choosing an IT company or service provider is a major commitment for most businesses. The efficiency of your business will likely depend on how efficient your infrastructure is setup. There are many components to IT; cyber security, managed services, hardware, software, cloud solutions and much more. So the question remains, how do you properly vet your potential IT company?

This goes without saying but is important to discuss. Very few companies will propose the exact same solutions. The key factor here is to understand what your company needs. Are you looking for a one-stop shop to handle everything or merely a company to procure hardware for your organization? Before you meet with any IT providers, make sure you have clear cut goals and objectives that you are looking to accomplish.

As always, it is best to meet the potential companies in person. This way you will be able to see what they are like as people, can you trust them, and are they actually experts in their given field. It is always best to have someone who can test their knowledge in the meetings, for obvious reasons.

A decision of this magnitude should not be taken lightly. Make sure to do your homework before you commit. Ask them for references that you can get on the phone with, not just email. Secondly, what are people saying about them online. Google reviews, LinkedIn, Facebook, Glassdoor and more. Do they have an overwhelming amount of negative reviews? If so, definitely a red flag.

When you interview multiple IT companies, each will propose their own solutions. It is crucial to understand how each company differentiates themselves from their competitors? Is one company more focused on cyber security? The other more focused on hardware? Make sure you understand what is important to your business and where your pain points are. With that information in mind, choose your IT company accordingly.
